A natural antibacterial used since antiquity, colloidal silver was used before penicillin to treat numerous infections.
Today it is used in the form of a ready-to-use suspension, based on purified water and silver particles, because of its antiseptic function. Capable of fighting viruses, bacteria and fungi, it is non-toxic and, therefore, very suitable for long-term use on dogs and cats.
But what exactly is colloidal silver, and how should it be used?
What is colloidal silver?
Colloidal silver is a solution consisting of microscopic silver particles suspended in water: being extremely small, they do not settle to the bottom of the solution but remain suspended due to their electrical charge.
Used for centuries as a natural antibacterial and antifungal agent, it is believed to kill a wide range of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi, thus limiting their ability to reproduce and cause disease.
However, you should consult your vet before using it on your animal, especially if it is already taking other medications.
The properties of colloidal silver
Used as a disinfectant for sterilisation, and because of its antibacterial properties, silver is now used for bandages and dressings for veterinary use, as well as for sanitising sprays.
Credit goes to his ability to:
- kill bacteria;
- fight fungi and yeast infections;
- alleviate skin inflammation;
- accelerate tissue regeneration in the case of burns and wounds;
- fight sinus infections and other bacterial infections.
Although some people also use it to strengthen their animals’ immune systems, colloidal silver’s primary use is for its antibacterial function and its ability to relieve irritated and inflamed skin, helping it regenerate and relieve itching and dryness.
Finally, colloidal silver is used in cases of:
- conjunctivitis and other eye infections;
- pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma;
- ear infections;
- antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections;
- viral infections such as canine distemper.
It is, therefore, an effective remedy against pathogenic organisms, as it targets the enzymes that regulate oxygen metabolism in diseased cells. By suffocating them, it kills them so that the body can then dispose of them.
Why use colloidal silver on dogs and cats
Applied to the skin, it provides immediate relief and helps the skin to regenerate in cases of ringworm, wounds and burns. Administered in the ears, it fights bacteria and yeasts. In the eyes, it is a useful remedy against infections, allergies, inflammation and tear stains.
Some experts, especially overseas, also recommend colloidal silver for the treatment of dental problems (applied directly to teeth and gums), for urinary disorders (administered by mouth, possibly mixed with wet food or water), and to strengthen the immune system.
How to use colloidal silver on dogs and cats
How to use colloidal silver on dogs and cats depends on the problem you intend to solve. For some ailments, oral administration in drops is recommended. For wounds, it can be applied diluted on the skin, and on the eyes, it is advisable to wipe with a soft cloth or cotton wool.
Colloidal silver is sold in the form of silver water, formulated for daily hygiene of the most delicate areas of the animal, starting with the eyes and ears (particularly prone to infection).
Our Help Spray is a 20 PPM (Parts Per Million) colloidal silver cosmetic skin and coat sanitising spray that can be used on all types of coats (even light-coloured coats, as it does not stain the coat). Thoroughly disinfects hair and skin, leaving dogs and cats clean and fragrant. How to use it? Make three or four sprays at a distance of 30 centimetres twice a day: wait a few seconds and remove residues by brushing the coat thoroughly. Finally, use a cloth to polish the coat.
